History

RobandSueHumkePrairie Springs Woodworking was founded in 1980. The business was started by Rob Humke who began first as a hobbyist selling wooden furniture at various craft shows. As time went, on the business began to specialize in custom wood railings.

In 1990, Rob’s wife Susan Humke, quit her job as a CNA at Holy Family Hall and joined the business changing Prairie Springs Woodworking from a sole proprietorship to partnership. The business has always been a family affair, with Rob’s father Don Humke working in the shop until his retirement in 1995.

Rob’s son, Jamie Humke, having grown up as an apprentice under his father, officially joined the team in 2002. Under his leadership, he hopes to continue to grow and master the delivery of high-quality railing his father first started to craft forty years ago and that customers have come to expect today.

Prairie Springs Woodworking prides itself in the quality products provided to the Dubuque and Tri-State area. Much of the handcrafted wood railings are also sourced from local vendors. A sawmill was purchased in 2009, allowing Prairie Springs Woodworking to cut and manufacture boards using the trees found on the 20 acres of land it sits upon.

Rob and Sue’s home is also located on the same property as the business.  It’s where they raised their three kids Jamie, Andrew, and Holly. Through the years their kids have helped out in the shop sweeping floors, sanding spindles, and/or assisting in the installation at a client’s home making this business stronger with every helping hand.
